CEPHAS

Definition

A son of Jonas or John, a brother of Andrew, a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, a fisherman by trade who resided at Capernaum. His original name was Somon or Simeon, but when he was called to the apostleship, the Lord gave him the name of Peter with a prophetic reference to what he should do and be for the church. He had an impulsive temperament and was always in a hurry, the first to confess and the first to deny the Lord; but he sincerely repented and strengthened his brethren. He laid the foundation of the church among the Jews on the day of Pentecost and he admitted the first Gentiles, Cornelius and his family, to baptism.
